website sizing cardelMichelle Cardel, Ph.D., R.D., faculty member in the Institute for Child Health Policy and assistant professor in the Department of Health Outcomes & Policy, was invited to participate in the University of California San Francisco’s Research in Implementation Science for Equity (RISE) program. The national program trains researchers in implementation science, a field of study aimed at integrating research findings and evidence into health care policy and practice.

The National Institutes of Health sponsors RISE through its National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. This two-year-long program provides junior faculty with expert mentoring and a two-part summer training session that addresses the skills necessary to develop high-quality implementation science research. RISE is tailored to most benefit researchers whose work deals with addressing the high numbers of minorities facing cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases.

Cardel’s research focuses on understanding factors that contribute to the development of obesity and implementing effective prevention and treatment programs for childhood obesity in underserved populations.

“The knowledge and mentoring that I’ll gain from this program will be invaluable when working on my upcoming study,” Cardel said. Her most recent grant from the UF Clinical and Translational Science Institute will fund an investigation into the causal relationship between social status, eating behavior, obesity, and cardiovascular risk factors in Hispanic adolescents. Read more about her new grant here. Cardel also has a granted funded in collaboration with François Modave, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Health Outcomes & Policy, to develop DiaFit, an app to treat the symptoms of obesity and diabetes.
