Research is revealing a bad news, good news situation when it comes to how GLP-1 medications affect pregnancy. Sold under brand names such as Ozempic, prescriptions that mimic Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 are being used for blood sugar and weight control.

Women who used a GLP-1 within two years prior to becoming pregnant showed a higher risk for preeclampsia but a lower risk for gestational diabetes, according to a study led by Dominick Lemas, Ph.D., in the University of Florida’s Institute for Child Health Policy.
Lemas presented preliminary findings in November at a meeting of The Obesity Society. The study was profiled on December 3 in Healio’s publication Endocrine Today.
