The National Academy of Medicine Obesity Interest Group has invited Michelle Cardel, Ph.D., R.D., to give a presentation on social determinants of obesity at the group’s 2016 annual meeting. Cardel, whose research focuses on factors influencing obesity, will give her talk in Washington D.C. on October 16.
“I am honored to speak on such an important and foundational topic at this meeting, which will include international experts in the field of obesity and disparities research,” said Cardel, faculty member in the Institute for Child Health Policy and assistant professor in the Department of Health Outcomes & Policy. The National Academy of Medicine is regarded as one of the nation’s most authoritative and distinguished groups of medical scientists, serving alongside the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering as advisors to the nation and the international community on health and medicine, the natural, social and behavioral sciences and other related fields.
“I hope my current research may shed some light on new pathways that lead minority adolescents to become obese, eventually leading to culturally appropriate and effective preventive interventions,” said Cardel, referencing her recent grant from the UF Clinical and Translational Science Institute. The award will fund an investigation that examines the causal relationship between social status, eating behavior, obesity, and cardiovascular risk factors in Hispanic adolescents.
